Atkins, Hall among nine Bengals placed on PUP
CINCINNATI -- The Bengals did some tinkering with the roster on Monday, three days before they hold their first training camp practice.
Most of their moves involved the status of injured players who haven't yet been medically cleared for practice, although there is the possibility that could change by Thursday.
All-Pro defensive tackle Geno Atkins (ACL) and cornerback Leon Hall (Achilles) were among nine players placed on the active/physically unable to perform. Players on active PUP count against the team's training camp roster limit of 90 players but they must still be cleared by medical personnel to begin practicing with the team. Players who are on active PUP at the start of training camp and remain there are eligible to be placed on reserve PUP once the season begins, in which case they would be eligible to return to the active roster after Week 6 of the season.
The others on the active PUP list are: guard Clint Boling (ACL), linebacker Marquis Flowers (hamstring), punter Kevin Huber (neck), wide receiver Colin Lockett (hamstring), defensive tackle Zach Minter (back), defensive tackle Devon Still (back) and wide receiver Ryan Whalen (hamstring). Three other players -- wide receiver Marvin Jones (ankle), cornerback Onterio McCalebb (knee) and quarterback A.J. McCarron (shoulder) -- have been placed on the active/non-football injury list, which is a lot like the active PUP without the benefit of being able to go on reserve PUP if the injury lingers into the regular season.
Atkins, Hall, Boling and Huber were among the 10 Bengals players who were on injured reserve at the end of last season.
The Bengals also waived wide receiver Alex Neutz and signed defensive tackle LaKendrick Ross on Monday. Neutz had been signed as a college free agent from Buffalo on May 12. Ross (6-4, 350) last played for Virginia-Lynchburg in 2012.
Players are to report for camp at the team's facilities at Paul Brown Stadium on Wednesday, with the first practice scheduled for Thursday morning. This is the third year the Bengals have held their training camp in Cincinnati.
