Arizona State senior wide receiver Jamal Miles and senior running back James Morrison did not play in the team's season opener Thursday night against Northern Arizona after being suspended for a team rules violation.

An Arizona State spokesperson said both players are expected to return for next week's home game against Illinois.

The absence marked Miles' second straight missed game, as he did not travel with ASU to last season's Las Vegas Bowl.

Miles, ASU's only returning receiver with significant experience, finished his junior season with 60 receptions for 361 yards and six touchdowns. He also was a second team All-Pac-12 selection as a return specialist after totaling 788 yards and two touchdowns on returns.

With Miles out, the Sun Devils started true freshman Richard Smith, who was listed behind Miles on the team's first depth chart. Smith was listed as even with junior Kyle Middlebrooks, but coach Todd Graham said Monday that Middlebrooks was not expected to play while still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

Morrison was listed as the backup to starting tailback Cameron Marshall. Junior-college transfer Marion Grice played in Morrison's absence against NAU and scored three touchdowns.
