ASU women blow out Arizona
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Katie Hempen scored 11 points Tuesday, nine in the second half, and No. 11 Arizona State rode a second-half surge to a 60-36 win over Arizona.
With the score tied at 26, Arizona State (20-3, 9-2 Pacific-12 Conference) opened the second half with a 12-2 run and led 38-28, forcing an Arizona timeout, then ripped runs of 8-0 and 14-0 to lead by 26.
After a jumper by Erica Barnes got Arizona within 12, 46-34 with 11:29 left, the Wildcats would not score again until Breanna Workman hit the first of two free throws with 17 seconds remaining in the game.
Deja Mann and Joy Burke scored eight apiece for the Sun Devils, who will face Arizona (4-18, 0-11) again at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Tucson.
The Wildcats took an early 18-8 lead, but ASU used 3-pointers by Mann and Elisha Davis during an 8-0 run to tie the score at the half.
Kama Griffits led Arizona with 10 points but was held scoreless in the second half. LaBrittney Jones grabbed nine rebounds.
"I thought it was a great team win," ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne said. "The starters started us strong, but then (the bench) came in and built that lead even bigger."
Turner Thorne was proud of how the team responded after a sluggish first half.
"Emotionally, we were excited for the game,"Turner Thorne said. "Mentally, we weren’t quite ourselves early on, but then we just got fired up. I think that’s going to make the difference for us down the stretch… if we can play the type of defense we played in the second half."
ASU was dominant on the glass, outrebounding Arizona 37-28. Freshmen Kelsey Moos (nine rebounds), Sophie Brunner (eight) and Quinn Dornstauder (seven) combined for 24 boards, including nine of ASU’s 14 of the offensive glass. ASU also recorded 18 assists on 23 field goals. Davis, Hempen and Mann led the way with four assists each.
The Sun Devils have now won 20 or more games 10 times since the 2000-01 season.
