A pair of grand slams in the fifth inning lifted the Arizona State softball team to a 11-9 victory over No. 16 Stanford on Friday night in front of a crowd of 1,875.
Amber Freeman and Katelyn Boyd both connected for grand slams in the contest to help ASU come from behind for an 11-9 win. Talor Haro and Sam Parlich each went 3 for 4 at the plate while Mackenzie Popescue picked up her sixth win of the season.
Stanford (32-14, 6-10 Pac-12) scored four runs in the third on a Jenna Rich grand slam to take an early lead. ASU (37-5, 9-2 Pac-12) answered in the bottom of the frame when Bailey Wigness came home on a Katelyn Boyd single to left to close the gap at 4-1.
The Cardinal tacked on two more runs in the fourth, both unearned, during an Ashley Hansen at-bat to make it 6-1.
Mackenzie Popescue came on in relief in the top of the fifth to replace Dallas Escobedo, who had one strikeout in four innings of work.
The ASU offense came to life and put on a show in the bottom of the fifth, tallying two grand slams in the inning. Freeman, a freshman, hit her first career grand slam to cut the Devils' deficit to 6-5, and after ASU reloaded the bases, Boyd hit one out to left-center to give ASU the 9-6 lead.
Annie Lockwood joined the action in in the bottom of the sixth, hitting her seventh homer of the season to make it 10-6. Parlich then extended the lead to 11-6 when her double to right-center brought home Breanna Kaye.
Stanford scored three runs in the top of the seventh on six hits, but that was as close as the Cardinal would get. Popescue picked up the win to improve to 6-1 on the year, while Teagan Gerhart took the loss to fall to 27-9.
