ASU receives both first-, second-half kickoffs

A bizarre sequence at the start of the Arizona State-UCLA game Saturday afternoon led to the Sun Devils receiving the kickoff at the start of both halves.

UCLA was late arriving to the field before the game, with punter Jeff Locke -- who had been practicing near midfield -- the only player available to meet the ASU captains and the game officials for the coin toss.

The Bruins won the toss, but Locke, apparently being unfamiliar with the options, chose for UCLA to kick off; a team wishing to kick off in the first half typically defers the choice to the second half, at which point it elects to receive. But since Locke chose to kick off, the Sun Devils had the choice at the start of the second half and elected to receive the kick for the second time.

The extra ASU possession at the start of the third quarter nearly changed the outcome of the game, as the Sun Devils kicked a field goal and eventually took the lead in the final minutes. The Bruins, however, kicked a field goal on the final play of the game for a 45-43 win.
