ASU rallies, completes sweep of Oregon State
The 23rd-ranked Arizona State baseball team scored five runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 5-1 win and complete the series sweep over No. 17 Oregon State on Saturday in front of 2,622 fans at Packard Stadium.
James McDonald drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single up the middle, and Max Rossiter followed with a three-run home run to left field to complete a late-game rally that lifted the Devils to 19-12 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-12.
Right-hander Robert Ravago (3-0) earned the win after pitching the back end of the seventh and all of the eighth, striking out two while not allowing a runner.
ASU right-hander Darin Gillies threw three scoreless innings before giving up a leadoff double and an RBI single in the first two at-bats of the fourth inning. Left-hander Matt Dunbar replaced Gillies with runners on second and third and no outs and retired the next three batters to keep the Devils’ deficit at one run.
The Beavers (18-11, 6-6) had scored their only run of the game of an RBI single in the fourth inning by Jake Rodriguez.
ASU first baseman Abe Ruiz added an RBI single in the eighth inning that scored Andrew Aplin, who led off the frame with a base hit to right field.
Oregon State left-hander Jace Fry (2-2) took the loss after giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
