SEATTLE -- The 13th-ranked Arizona State baseball team was overcome by Washington 8-7 in 11 innings in the series opener Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
The Sun Devils (34-19-1, 15-13) took a 4-0 lead with in the second inning but fell behind by a run in the bottom of the fifth, 5-4, before tying the game in the sixth. ASU then took a one-run lead in both the eighth and 10th innings, but the Huskies (23-31, 14-14) countered with runs in the bottom of each frame before securing the game-winning run in the 11th on a two-out RBI single.
The bottom of ASU's lineup went 6 for 14 with four RBI and two runs scored, as left fielder Jake Peevyhouse recorded three hits and a pair of RBI while first baseman Dalton DiNatale added two RBI.
ASU scored four runs on five hits and batted around in the top of the second inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Catcher Max Rossiter, Causey and shortstop Drew Stankiewicz each singled to start the frame and load the bases for DiNatale, who drove in the first run of the series on with an RBI single through the right side. Peevyhouse followed with a two-run double down the right-field line and third baseman Michael Benjamin hit a sacrifice fly to center field to push the Devils' to a four-run advantage.
The Huskies took a one-run lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the fifth inning after the Devils failed to turn an inning-ending double play that eventually led to five two-out runs. UW loaded the bases with one out on a single and two walks before center fielder Jayce Ray hit a grounder to Stankiewicz, who tossed to second baseman James McDonald for the second out, but Ray reached first on an RBI fielder's choice to score the Dawgs first run of the game. They added four more runs on an RBI single, a two-run single and an RBI double before a liner to left ended the frame.
Causey tied the game at five runs apiece in the proceeding frame after he led off the sixth with a double, moved to third on a shallow fly ball to right-center field and scored on a wild pitch.
DiNatale knocked in a sacrifice fly to center field to score pinch runner Tucker Esmay and give the Devils the lead, 6-5, in the top of the eighth. Causey took a leadoff walk before Esmay advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Allen and a single by Stankiewicz.
Pinch hitter RJ Ybarra drove the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence for the go-ahead home run in the top of the 10th inning, but the Huskies responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 7-7. Right-hander Ryan Burr hit the leadoff batter, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third, and scored the tying run on a grounder back to the pitcher.
Right-hander Josh McAlister (0-1) took his first loss of the season after surrendering the walk-off single to left fielder Joe Meggs with two outs in the bottom of the 11th. He gave up one hit and walked a pair in the final frame.
Left-hander Brett Lilek tossed two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit in the sixth and seventh. Burr did not allow a hit and struck out three in 2 2/3 innings, but conceded the tying run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Starting right-hander Trevor Williams struck out six and allowed five runs on nine hits and did not factor in the decision as he was replaced after the Huskies' five-run inning fifth inning. He gave up two singles and hit a batter with two outs to load the bases in the bottom of the second, but struck out shotstop Ty Afenir to leave all three runners stranded.
Washington starter Jared Fisher earned a no-decision after allowing five runs on six hits in six innings. Trevor Dunlap (4-3) earned the win after giving up one run on four hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.
The Sun Devils and Huskies continue their series at 4 p.m. Saturday.
