ASU adds sand volleyball program for 2014
TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State will become the sixth Pac-12 school to field a women's sand volleyball team, starting with the spring 2014 season.
Jason Watson, head coach of the indoor volleyball program since 2008, will also serve as head coach of the sand volleyball team.
Fifteen schools competed in sand volleyball in 2012, and 15 added the sport in 2013. When 40 institutions in Division I and II have sponsored varsity programs for one year, the NCAA will sponsor an NCAA Championship.
Arizona recently added a sand volleyball program, joining other Pac-12 programs at California, Stanford, USC and UCLA.
Sand volleyball teams are required to play at least eight dates, with at least three dual matches. The maximum number of competitions is 16 dates.
Arizona was the first state to add sand volleyball as an officially sanctioned high school sport. The Arizona Interscholastic Association is expected to add eight to 32 teams this spring.
Sand volleyball consists of five matches between two-player teams. Each match accounts for one point in team scoring, with the winning team needing to win at least three matches.
