Arizona women downed by California
Box score
BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Arizona women's basketball team fell to the California Golden Bears 80-60 on Saturday.
With the loss, the Wildcats now sit at 11-4 overall and 2-2 in Pac-10 play. The Golden Bears improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10.
"Obviously, this is a disappointing loss for us," Wildcats coach Niya Butts said. "I think we carried some of our play from the Stanford game into today. You have to give a lot of credit to Cal. They played tough and they rebounded the ball well. We didn't push enough in transition and we didn't rebound the ball well. That's why we didn't come away with a win."
Senior forward Ify Ibekwe had 12 points and 15 boards, including eight
defensively, for her fifth double-double of the season. Sophomore guard
Davellyn Whyte led all scorers with 23 points and went 7 for 7 from the
free-throw line. She also grabbed three rebounds, one steal and handed
out two assists.
The first half opened with an 8-0 run by the Golden Bears. Arizona answered with its own 8-0 run but couldn't muster much of an offense after that. The Wildcats were 12 of 41 (29.3 percent) in the first half compared with Cal's 53.6 percent (15 of 28). The Golden Bears also made 8 of 12 free throws -- Arizona didn't make a single trip to the line -- to take a 42-26 lead into the half.
The second half was much like the first, with Cal shooting well and Arizona struggling on offense, and Arizona never seriously challenged.
The Golden Bears finished with a 55-28 rebounding advantage.
Lindsay Sherbert was Cal's leading scorer with 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Talia Caldwell led the Bears on the glass with 18 rebounds, and Rama N'diaye had 11. The Bears had five players score in double digits.
Arizona's usual starting five again got the nod on Saturday: junior guard Shanita Arnold, Ibekwe, junior guard Brooke Jackson, senior forward Soana Lucet and junior Davellyn Whyte.
