TUCSON, Ariz. -- Adrienne Gehan recorded a team-high 13 kills to lift California (8-3, 1-1 Pac-12) to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-23) victory over Arizona (10-4, 0-2 Pac-12) on Friday night at Haas Pavilion.
Cal outhit Arizona .197-.119 on the night while outblocking the Wildcats 10-8. The Golden Bears also had four service aces. Arizona did not have a service ace on the night and recorded eight costly service errors.
Madi Kingdon continued her strong season, finishing with a match-high 19 kills on .260 hitting with seven digs, four blocks and two assists. Penina Snuka dished out 27 assists with eight digs, while Jane Croson and Ronni Lewis led the Arizona defense with 12 digs and 10 digs, respectively.
Neither team could pull away in the opening set as they battled to a 23-23 tie. After Cal won the next point on a Jillian Schonewise kill to earn set point, an Arizona attack error ended the set, 25-23. Both teams were efficient offensively as Cal hit .333 and Arizona hit .244. Kingdon was incredible offensively for the Cats as she had seven kills in the frame.
It was all Cal in the second set as the Bears jumped out to a quick 7-4 advantage and they never looked back. The Golden Bears went on to win the 25-14. Cal hit .243 in the set, while Arizona struggled to just a .026 hitting percentage.
Arizona came out strong to open the third set as it took a 10-6 lead. The Wildcats extended their lead to 19-13 following a 3-0 run, which forced a Cal timeout. Following the break, the Bears reeled off seven straight points to take a 20-19 lead. After a Cal attack error tied the score 20-20, the Bears won three straight points to take a 23-20 lead. Arizona would not quit as it battled back to a one-point deficit at 24-23, but a service error ended the set and match.
