Arizona soccer dominates Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Arizona women’s soccer team earned its second win of the 2012 season with a 3-1 triumph over Creighton on Sunday.

Arizona (2-2) came out aggressive on offense, registering 17 shots, including nine on goal. Senior forward Susana Melendez picked up her second goal of the season in the 13th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. In the 17th minute, junior forward Jazmin Ponce recorded her second goal of the season off a pass from freshman Hannah Wong. And late in the second half, Ponce scored her second goal of the contest in the 84th minute, with senior Kristin Strother picking up the assist on the play.

The Wildcats outshot the Bluejays (1-4-1) 17-8, with Ponce leading the way with five shots and sophomore Emily Lai right behind her with three. Ponce was one of five Wildcats to play the full 90 minutes, with the others being Sheridan Cohen, Kirstyn Magyar, Mykaylin Rosenquist and Gabby Kaufman.

In net, Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman stopped five shots while Creighton goalkeeper Katie Jo Swanson had six saves.
