Washington racked up 30 base hits in a 23-1 victory over host Arizona on Friday evening at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz.
The Huskies' hit total (15-28, 7-12 Pac-12) was the highest ever for an opponent of the Wildcats (28-16, 9-10 Pac-12). The most Arizona had previously allowed
in single game was 27, which had occurred three times,
the last on March 4, 2000, at Arizona State. The 22-run margin of
defeat was the Wildcats' largest since a 32-3 defeat at the hands of Arizona State on March 4, 2000.
Four players had four-hit games for Washington, led by Robert Pehl’s 4-for-6 night at the plate that included five runs batted in.
Ten players scored a run and eight drove in a run for the Huskies. Jayce Ray went 4 for 5 with three runs and a pair of runs batted in, while Parker Guinn was 4 for 5 with three runs and three RBI.
Michael Camporeale was 3 for 5 with four runs batted in, including a three-run homer in the top of the third that set the tone for the rest of the evening.
Washington, which claimed a 7-0 lead after three innings, chased Arizona starter Konner Wade from the game during a six-run fourth inning. Wade (L, 4-5) took the loss after giving up nine runs – eight earned – on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
As if the 13 runs in four trips to the plate were not enough, the Huskies tacked on six more runs in the fifth against the Wildcats’ bullpen. Arizona used four relievers to close out the game, with each giving up at least one run.
UA scored its lone run of the game in bottom of the fourth inning. Brandon Dixon, who went 3 for 4, led off with a double and later scored on Kevin Newman’s groundout.
Overshadowed by the offensive outburst, Washington right-hander Jared Fisher (W, 2-2) was strong on the mound, going eight innings, scattered eight hits and walking just one to earn the win.
Arizona wore copper helmets for the first time in school history.
