Aramis Ramirez has polyp removed, will miss start of spring training
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke announced in Wednesday's morning briefing with reporters that third baseman Aramis Ramirez will miss the first few spring training games.
According to Brewers vice president and assistant general manager Gord Ash, the 35-year-old native of the Dominican Republic underwent a routine colonoscopy in December. A small polyp was discovered during that exam and the polyp was removed shortly thereafter. The polyp was non-cancerous, and no additional problems are expected.
"My understanding is that there are no issues to be concerned with," Ash said. "He's had no setbacks. His usual routine is that he hits a lot. He's just behind a little bit and there is no rush."
Roenicke echoed Ash's comments.
"I know he's swinging the bat right now," Roenicke said. "We'll see him Friday with the rest of the guys. He just won't be ready to play in games the first few days."
Knee injuries limited Ramirez to 92 games last season. He hit .283 with 12 home runs and 49 runs batted in while his slugging percentage dipped nearly 70 points to .461 from his 2012 season.
Neither Ash nor Roenicke expect the issue to impact Ramirez's availability for Opening Day.
