AP women's basketball poll gets ASU, Arizona confused

Published Jan. 12, 2015 12:25 p.m. ET

It happens all the time. Just as surely as the sun rising in the West, er East, some media organization will confuse the beloved Pac-12 institutions of higher learning in our great state of Arizona.

This time, the culprit was the Associated Press women's basketball rankings -- which on Monday originally listed Arizona as honorable mention with 10 votes (see below).

This is the same Arizona team that lost three games a week ago by an average margin of 25 points to fall into last place in the Pac-12 with a record of 7-8.

Most likely, those 10 votes were supposed to have have been earmarked for Arizona State, which administered two of the beatdowns on Arizona last week and now sits at 15-1 on the season with 11 consecutive victories. (The AP revised the rankings later in the day to remove Arizona.)

No harm, no foul. Folks around these parts know this is a laughably common occurrence -- one that doesn't seem to happen quite so frequently with our friends from Oregon, or Oklahoma, or Michigan, etc. (Or maybe we just notice it more.)

In any case, here's your too-regular reminder that Arizona and Arizona State are two different schools.

ARIZONA: Nickname -- Wildcats. Colors -- Cardinal Red and Navy Blue. Home -- Tucson.

ARIZONA STATE: Nickname -- Sun Devils. Colors -- Maroon, Gold and Ubiquitous Black. Home -- Tempe.
