Another Ordonez headed to Detroit?

DETROIT -- No, Tigers fans, Magglio Ordonez wasn't back in the lineup Saturday night.

There were certainly plenty of reasons to remember him, though.

Late Saturday afternoon, in the 38th round of this weekend's draft, the Tigers selected Magglio Ordonez Jr., the son of the player who hit one of the most famous homers in franchise history -- the walk-off shot against Oakland's Huston Street to send the Tigers to the 2006 World Series.

The elder Ordonez, now 40 years old, has gone into politics and serves as the mayor of Juan Antonio Sotillo in Venezuela. His son is a senior at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida -- the same school that Nick Castellanos attended during his freshman and sophomore years.

In the first hours after the younger Ordonez was selected, the Tigers hit two homers with connections to the pick. Castellanos homered in the third and then, in an especially odd coincidence, Eugenio Suarez hit his first career home run in the next inning.

Not only Suarez a Venezuelan native, he wears Ordonez's No. 30 and hit the ball to the same part of Comerica Park as the famous drive in 2006.
