Taken in the second round with the No. 47 pick, Canning comes to the Angels from right up the road at UCLA. In his junior season, Canning made 17 starts for the Bruins going 7-4 with a 2.34 ERA and 140 strikeouts. Prior to his time at UCLA, he was a standout prep star at Santa Margarita High School.

Canning was drafted previously by the Rockies in the 38th round of the 2014 draft but chose college over signing.
