ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Angels parted ways with veteran reliever Ryan Madson Monday, releasing him before he ever threw a pitch in an Angels' uniform.
The oft-injured right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012 after injuring his arm in spring training with the Cincinnati Reds but suffered a number of setbacks. The local product who prepped at Moreno Valley's Valley View High and came up with the Phillies signed a one-year, $3.5 million incentive-laden contract with Los Angeles this year.
Manager Mike Scioscia had high hopes for Madson as a closer, but those hopes never came to fruition.
Madson was plagued by complications of the procedure, which was performed by the Angels' late team doctor Lewis Yocum. He recently went out on a rehab assignment but threw only one inning for Class-A Inland Empire. Madson felt lingering pain in the surgically-repaired elbow and was shut down.
Madson had seen specialists all over the country as well as received special rehab attention, much to no avail.
"Frustration is the right word," Scioscia said. "We thought we had Ryan ready to pitch for us a number of times and it obviously didn't pan out."
Madson last pitched in 2011 for the Phillies. He is not expected to pitch in the majors in 2013.
"There's disappointment, there's frustration and we move on," Scioscia said.
