INDIANAPOLIS -- American Matt Grevers broke the world record in the 100-meter backstroke Saturday at the Duel in the Pool, winning the race in 48.92 seconds.
Nick Thoman, also an American, set the previous mark of 48.94 in December 2009 in Great Britain.
After the race, Grevers pumped his fist and jumped up. He told the crowd during a post-race interview that after coming close to breaking the world record in the 200 back that he knew he could do it Saturday.

Serbia's Arkady Vyatchanin finished second in 50.37 while American Eugene Godsoe was third in 51.08 seconds.
Grevers' victory gave the U.S. a 111-65 lead over Europe.
