American Heather Bergsma breaks women's 1,000 record

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) American Heather Bergsma broke the world record in the women's 1,000 meters Saturday in a World Cup speedskating event at the Olympic Oval.
Bergsma finished in 1 minute, 12.51 seconds, just minutes after American teammate Brittany Bowe lowered her own world mark with a time of 1:12.54. Bowe set the previous record of 1:12.58 in 2013.
China's Zhang Hong was third in 1:12.65.
Gerben Jorritsma of the Netherlands won the men's 1,000 in 1:07.20. Pavel Kulizhnikov of Russia was second in 1:07.33, followed by Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands in 1:07.40, and Americans Joey Mantia in 1:07.51 and Shani Davis in 1:07.75.
