All-Star Durant out indefinitely for Thunder with foot soreness
More bad news for the Thunder.
But that's just the way the season has gone this season for Oklahoma City.
General manager Sam Presti announced Kevin Durant will be out indefinitely as Durant is recovering from right foot soreness from a second surgery to repair a fracture.
Durant had been taking part in some elements of practice in the past week, but coach Scott Brooks said Durant didn't practice Tuesday.
"He's not making the progress we had hoped." Presti said in a news conference on Friday. "He's being removed from basketball activities."
Durant has played just 27 games and played just once since the All-Star break -- against Dallas on Feb. 19. He had a second surgery in late February to alleviate pain from a screw that was inserted in his foot earlier this season. Durant also missed the first 17 games of the season.
While Presti didn't go so far as to say Durant is out for the rest of the regular season, it would be extremely optimistic to think he'd return. The Thunder are one game ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Thunder have 14 games remaining. They will take on the Atlanta Hawks Friday night in Oklahoma City.
"We're moving in that direction," Presti said if it would be better to shut Durant down for the rest of the regular season.
Durant, who averaged 25.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in the 27 games he played, will be evaluated at a later, unknown time, Presti said.
"My focus is on being diligent and evidence-based and staying true to the process," Presti said referring to when Durant might return. "That's what we're doing. We have to do the right thing. We've got some of the best and brightest specialists (conferring on Durant's condition).
"Unless he's able to be on the floor without soreness, he won't be back on the floor."
