Alabama C Jones wins scholar-athlete award
NEW YORK (AP) -- Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones won the William V. Campbell Trophy on Tuesday night as the top scholar-athlete in college football.
Jones was announced as the winner at the National Football Foundation's Hall of Fame induction and awards banquet in Manhattan.
The senior played center for the second-ranked Crimson Tide this season, and is a four-year starter who has been a standout across the line. He played mostly at tackle last season and was an All-American.
He majors in accounting and has a 4.0.
Jones already received an $18,000 scholarship for post-graduate studies for being one of 15 finalists. As the winner he receives another $7,000 in scholarship money.
The other finalists were Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley, Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead, Texas tech safety Cody Davis, Mount Union safety Nick Driskill, Baylor quarterback Nick Florence, Northern Illinois defensive tackle Nabal Jefferson, West Texas A&M offensive lineman Aaron Mullane, Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib, Robert Morris defensive end Nolan Nearhoof, MIT offensive lineman Ethan Peterson, Duke quarterback Sean Renfree, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o, Northwestern offensive lineman Patrick Ward and Saint Xavier (Ill.) receiver Shane Zackery.
Last year's winner was Army linebacker Andrew Rodriguez.
