The last time the Wild and Avalanche squared off, less than a week ago in Colorado, visiting Minnesota blitzed the hosts with two goals in the first 61 seconds and held on for a 4-3 win against one of the NHL's highest-scoring teams.

On Wednesday, the critical scoring again came in bunches, with the game's first three goals spanning less than a minute during a stretch in the second half of the first period. Minnesota won that flurry, 2-1, and went on to record a 3-2 win over what had to be a desperate Avalanche team that had lost four straight and fallen to 14th in the Western Conference playoff race.

Thanks to a loss in their own most recent outing and the three off-days that followed, the Wild slipped in the standings, too, though not as dramatically. Reentry came with the win, as Minnesota jumped up
