ASU knew what it was getting into by scheduling up this season.
Strengthening the quality of opponent comes with a refined set of risks and rewards, and at this point the Sun Devils have come through about as expected, at 3-3 entering another tester against 2010 NCAA tournament team Richmond at newly configured Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday afternoon.
It is the first time in a decade they do not have a winning record at this point. But it is not how you start but how you finish, and ASU believes this will have benefits in March.
Winning on tough home floors at New Mexico and Baylor would have been difficult under any circumstance, let alone for a team trying to break in seven newcomers and needing immediate help in the post. Both those teams were No. 3 seeds in the NCAA tournament last year, and the Bears made it all the way to the South Regional finals before falling to Duke.
