A first for Waino: co-honoree as NL Player of the Week
ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright didn't throw a no-hitter last week, but he still shared honors for National League Player of the Week with the man who did, Josh Beckett.
It was the first time Wainwright has won even a share of MLB's weekly award.
Wainwright came as close as one can to throwing a no-no with a one-hit shutout against the Diamondbacks last Tuesday. He allowed only one base runner while tying his career best with 12 strikeouts. In his other start, Wainwright went eight scoreless innings against the Reds and won his eighth game, most in the NL.
For the season, Wainwright leads the majors with a 1.67 ERA and is second in innings (81 in 11 starts) and batting average allowed (.185). His next start is scheduled for Friday night against Madison Bumgarner of the Giants at Busch Stadium.
