10 things to know: Mater Dei's Jonathan Lockett

Published Oct. 30, 2013 10:15 p.m. ET

When it comes to the top cover corners on the West Coast, Jonathan Lockett, AKA Lockett Island, is in the conversation. The Washington commit is tied for the Mater Dei team lead in passes defended. In addition to playing cornerback, he also plays wide receiver and returns kicks.

However, the spotlight will be on him at corner Friday night when his Monarchs take on the top-ranked team in the CIF-SS, St. John Bosco. The matchup of Lockett and Bosco wide receiver Shay Fields is sure to be must-see TV when they battle on Friday night at 7 p.m. on FOX Sports West.

As Friday approaches, here are 10 things you may not know about the talented Lockett:

Favorite sport
Before ever stepping onto the gridiron, Lockett was on the hardwood. Basketball was his favorite sport growing up. He enjoyed playing point guard before switching his focus to football.

Late night snack
When it’s late and he’s looking for something to snack on, Lockett is reaching for a bag of Skittles, but not the original kind if he can help it.

“The purple bag,” he said.

Favorite team
Like a good amount of Angelenos, Lockett is a huge fan of Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Favorite movie
Sticking with the basketball theme, the Mater Dei cornerback lists the 2005 basketball film "Coach Carter" starring Samuel L. Jackson as his favorite movie.

Biggest fear
Drowning. When Lockett was 14-years-old, he watched someone nearly drown. The person was eventually rescued but it was an experience that has stayed with him.

"I was swimming and I got out (of the water) and I was looking in the pool and saw somebody," he recalled. "They saved him but it took them a while. It was a big pool so it was way deep in the middle."

No. 21
Lockett rocks the No. 21 in the red and white of Mater Dei on Friday nights but it wasn't his first choice. He originally wanted No. 22, but that number was already taken by a senior at the time. He had to settle on No. 21, which may not have been a bad thing.

"Since I got it, I always think about Deion Sanders because he played both sides of the ball and punt return, kick return, and all of that," Lockett said.

Pregame ritual
Similar to what he does late night, Lockett turns to Skittles pregame. His pregame ritual is eating two bags before every game.

"As soon as we get out of school we have meetings and stuff and I pop a bag and right before warmups I just chug down another bag," he said.

iPod
Lockett's musical selections these days includes Meek Mill, and also local stars in Compton's Kendrick Lamar and Leimert Parks Dom Kennedy.

"(I listen to) all the upcoming rappers right now," Lockett said.

Hobbies
When not doing something on the football field, Lockett is likely on the sticks.

"I'm big at video games," he said. "I play anything.

"Everything that's hot right now, I play it."
