There is a different dynamic to the Hart football team with Connor Wingenroth in the lineup.
He does just about everything for the team. He's their primary ball carrier, catches passes out of the backfield, and anchors the secondary. The Indians pressed on but his presence was certainly missed when he was out of the lineup for the first three Foothill League games with a shoulder injury. He's having a terrific season and one of the highlights includes being one of the 89 selections in the 2014 West Coast Bowl Draft.
Wingenroth returned to the lineup last week and will be counted on heavily when Hart (9-1, 3-1 Foothill League) takes on Canyon (7-2, 3-1 Foothill League) Friday in the Ford CIF Southern Section Game of the Week at 7 p.m. on FOX Sports West.
In the meantime, here are 10 things you may not know about him:
Meet Wings
Wingenroth played baseball from kindergarten through the eighth grade. In the second grade his teammates began calling him "Wings" and he's gone by that ever since.
Late night snack
When it's late and Wingenroth needs a snack, he's headed for the cupboard and grabbing a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
"(I'll get) a bowl, but then I'll just keep refilling it," he said.
Favorite team
"Wings" is a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. Growing up he was a huge fan of former safety Brian Dawkins. Even after Dawkins was no longer on the team, Michael Vick was and that was a good thing for Wingenroth.
"He was my first favorite player growing up," Wingenroth said of Vick.
Who'd play you in a movie?
The star in the Connor Wingenroth movie would be actor Tom Hardy, who's credits include "Inception" and also Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises."
Favorite movie
It's without a doubt the film "300."
"It's just like a super-intense, manly movie," Wingenroth said. "Before a game is a good time to watch it.
"It's really good."
No. 10
Growing up was always No. 7 but that number is retired at Hart. His inspiration to wear No. 10 came from Vince Young. He liked watching the former Texas quarterback do the unthinkable and help the Longhorns defeat USC in the 2006 national championship game.
Best sports memory
Wingenroth goes back to his sophomore year when Hart took on Valencia. In a game shown on FOX Sports West, Valencia took a 14-13 lead with a minute and a half remaining in the game. Wingenroth was the team's starting quarterback at the time. With 36 seconds left in the game, he connected with Tim White over the middle who tipped the ball to himself over the head of a Valencia defender and ran it in for a 39-yard score. Hart went on to win 19-14. It was their first win over Valencia in five years.
"We were supposed to get killed by them," Wingenroth recalls. "That's crazy."
Also, before that game, he was told he'd be the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the season.
Biggest fear
Drowning
"Like getting trapped somewhere like in a ship or something," he said.
Pregame ritual
When Wingenroth enters the locker room, he puts out all of his gear in the same order every time.
"I take out my helmet and cleats and shoulder pads," he said. "I lay them down on the bench and always put on shoulder pads and jersey last. Socks always first."
