10 things to know about West Torrance QB Heeger

Published Oct. 9, 2013 9:34 p.m. ET

Last season, Zach Heeger decided he wanted to play cornerback.

He was the team's backup quarterback but he wanted to get on the field.

This season, he's the starter at QB and CB after waiting his time. In the words of West Torrance head coach Greg Holt, "It's high school football, right?"

It certainly is and Heeger has a huge role at the command of the Warriors tempo offensively. They like to move and move quickly against the opposition.

On Friday, Heeger, the Warriors (5-0), and their tempo will invade Mira Costa (3-2) for the Bay League opener at 7 pm on Prime Ticket. It's the third meeting in the last two seasons for the league rivals.

Meanwhile, here's 10 things about the West Torrance signal caller:

Meet Heeg
The West Torrance quarterback goes by the shorter version of his last name: Heeg (sounds like need)

"That's what a lot of people call me," he said.

Favorite sport
Once he got to high school Heeger really fell in love with football. However, being on the gridiron wasn't always his first choice.

"Initially, I liked baseball," he said. "I was always a baseball guy. Really up until high school.

"Pop Warner was alright but high school football is where it really got me."

He owned a fastball with some movement.

"I'm a lefty so it's a tailing fastball," he said.

What would you dooo?
If it's late and Heeger wants a snack, he's heading straight for the freezer and grabbing a Klondike bar.

Favorite food
Give Heeger a cheeseburger and he's happy. He doesn't need all of the fixings. Just meat, cheese, and lettuce.

"Just nice and simple," he said.

Favorite team
Current Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian is a West Torrance alum and Heeger is a fan of his.

"I always like wherever Steve Sarkisian was," Heeger said. "I liked Sark's teams – SC and now I like Wahshington."

Sarkisian is the uncle of West Torrance center, Josh Petersen. When Sarkisian lived in the area, he frequented Pop Warner games that Heeger played in.

Favorite movie
"The Dark Knight Rises."

Heeger has always been a huge Batman fan and like a lot of kids wouldn't be too shy to rock a Batman costume growing up.

 "I love Batman," he said.

Who would play you in a movie?
It's a no-brainer for Heeger. Without a doubt he'd choose Morgan Freeman to play him in his life story.

"He's always kind of calm and Morgan Freeman’s just awesome," Heeger said. "I love Morgan Freeman."

If you could accomplish something in any sport, what would it be?
For this, he'd like to take it to the tennis courts and score a point on world No. 1 tennis star Serena Williams.

"I think I'd let her serve and I would just hit it back," Heeger said.

Somehow, someway he'd have to be able to return a 125 mph serve, which could be tough.

"I don't know about that," he said. "I don't practice."

Biggest fear
"It's gotta be snakes," he said.

Celebrity crush
Taylor Swift.
