World champion weightlifter Gyozo Veres dies at 74

Former weightlifting world champion Gyozo Veres of Hungary has died at 74.

His family told the Hungarian state news agency MTI that Veres died Tuesday in Melbourne, Australia. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Veres won a bronze medal as a middleweight at the 1960 Rome Olympics and another as a light-heavyweight four years later at the Tokyo Games. He set 18 world records between 1961-66 and was the world champion in 1962 and 1963.

Veres became a coach after retiring in 1970. He left Hungary in 1973 and settled in Australia a year later.
