The U.N. General Assembly has adopted a symbolic resolution calling for a truce around the period of the Winter Olympics and Paralympic games in Sochi, Russia.
The General Assembly has passed similar resolutions since 1993, but countries pursue wars whether the Olympics are on or not.
Russia and Georgia fought over South Ossetia during the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The Russian-sponsored resolution scrupulously avoided mention of the controversy swirling around the Sochi Olympics and Russia's new anti-gay propaganda law.

Russia's recent law prohibiting promotion of ''nontraditional'' sexual relations has been denounced by gay activists and criticized by President Barack Obama. Some activists have called for a boycott of the Sochi Games.
