Snowboarders Riegler, Sobolev win parallel GS world titles

LACHTAL, Austria (AP) Austrian snowboarder Claudia Riegler won the parallel giant slalom world championship for her first major title at age 41, while Andrey Sobolev of Russia took the men's gold on Friday.

Riegler, who won her last of four World Cups 13 years ago, beat Alena Zavarzina of Russia in a repeat of the final from the 2011 worlds.

Tomoka Takeuchi of Japan defeated Julie Zogg of Switzerland for the bronze medal.

Sobolev, who is yet to win a World Cup, won the men's final against Zan Kosir of Slovenia, a day after winning silver in the parallel slalom.

Two-time defending champion Benjamin Karl of Austria earned bronze after defeating Valery Kolegov of Russia.

The final medal event of the snowboard worlds is the big air on Saturday.
