U.S. luge Olympian Chris Mazdzer was first down the ice Friday, when the Mt. Van Hoevenberg track used as a training base for all three American sliding sports teams opened for the season.
A cold rain greeted sliders for the 9 a.m. opening. By late morning, several inches of wet snow was accumulating around the track complex.
Bobsled and skeleton teams hit the ice once the morning luge session was completed. The Lake Placid track is traditionally one of the first in the world to open for training.
Bobsled and skeleton teams open their World Cup season at the 2010 Olympic track in Whistler, British Columbia, on Nov. 22-28. The World Cup season for luge starts Nov. 27-28 at Igls, Austria.
