Russia to increase security for Sochi Olympics

Russia has announced plans to introduce extra security during the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi.

A decree on Sunday by President Dmitry Medvedev calls for new security measures over a three-month period at the start of 2014. The measures include the coordination of various security and law enforcement agencies.

Security during the games is a sensitive issue given Sochi's proximity to Abkhazia, a separatist region of Georgia that Moscow has recognized as independent. The two sides fought a brief war over the territory in 2008.

The Sochi games will be the first Olympic competition in Russia since 1980.
