Organizers of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have hired a new chief operating officer.
Marco Aurelio Costa Vieira, a former military officer, replaces Roderlei Generali, who was fired last month.
Rio organizing committee head Carlos Arthur Nuzman says Costa Vieira ''brings with him a wealth of multi-disciplined, large-scale management experience.''
He will be responsible for relations with national Olympic committees, the athletes village, venues, opening and closing ceremonies, accommodation, transportation, security and technology.
