Christine Nesbitt won Canada's first speedskating gold medal, capturing the women's 1,000 meters by a mere two-hundredths of a second.

Nesbitt was more than a half-second off the pace with one lap to go, but she really turned on the speed over the last 400 meters to win in 1 minute, 16.56 seconds.

Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands made up for a fall in the 500, taking silver in 1:16.58. The bronze also went to the Dutch, claimed by Laurine van Riessen in 1:16.72.
