Missing: Battleship airbrushed from Olympic poster

The ads show a River Thames that looks uncluttered - and Londoners knew right away there was something missing.

Organizers of the 2012 London Games apologized Thursday for airbrushing the HMS Belfast - a historic warship that now serves as a tourist attraction - out of posters meant to promote a related cultural festival.

Designers had eliminated the warship - based near Tower Bridge - from an aerial photograph of the river because it interfered with words in the advertisement meant to promote the festival.

Britain's tabloid press noted the omission, and veterans groups expressed outrage. Organizers say the ads without the Belfast will be removed.

The HMS Belfast is a large light cruiser that saw action in World War II and the Korean War.
