The governing body of modern pentathlon has approved laser pistols for use in junior competitions, but stopped short of introducing the new technology for the 2012 London Olympics.
The federation, known as UIPM, agreed at its congress that international junior and youth events should use the safer, more environmentally friendly pistols from January 2011.
Lasers were first used instead of pellet guns in August at the Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore.
UIPM president Klaus Schormann says he's ''extremely satisfied'' that the federation can use the new laser technology to develop the sport in youth and junior competitions around the world.
