The 2012 Olympics in London will break new ground by using blue pitches for the field hockey competition.
Organizers are dispensing with the traditional green surface for the first time at an Olympic or world-level event.
The blue pitches will provide high levels of contrast with the white ball and white lines for players, officials and spectators. The run-off areas surrounding the field of play will be pink.
Debbie Jevans, the organizing committee's director of sport, says ''the color blue will define hockey in 2012.''
