The Olympic flame for the inaugural Winter Youth Olympics has been successfully lit by the sun's rays at the birthplace of the modern Olympics.
It was a timely appearance by the sun on an otherwise overcast day at Athens' Panathinaiko Stadium, which hosted the inaugural Summer Olympics in 1896.
An actress dressed as an ancient priestess used a concave mirror to focus the sun's rays on a torch, which she handed over to a young runner.
''We...celebrate an exciting new chapter in the history of the Olympic Movement,'' International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said at the ceremony Saturday.
