Fellow freshman Li edges Franklin
Six-time 2013 Worlds gold medalist Missy Franklin has lost the Queen of the Pool title to a fellow freshman.
University of California freshman Celina Li won the Queen of the Pool competition at Cal Poly on Friday, beating Franklin by .12 of a second. After five 100-yard events -- backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle and individual medley -- Li posted a combined time of 4 minutes, 43.10 seconds, just ahead of Franklin’s 4 minutes, 43.22 seconds.
Li, 18, placed sixth in the 200-meter individual medley at the 2012 US Olympic trials.
Franklin won the 100-meter race in 49.43 seconds, nearly 1.5 seconds ahead of Cal sophomore Rachael Acker.
Full teams from Cal and Cal Poly were featured at the Anderson Aquatic Center in San Luis Obispo.
Franklin and her team will travel to Oregon State and Washington State for meets the next two Fridays.
