CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Sam Edney gave Canada its first World Cup men's luge victory Saturday, prevailing on home ice.
Edney's time of 46.146 seconds won the historic gold, beating Olympic champion Felix Loch of Germany (46.255) and Chris Mazdzer of Saranac Lake, New York (46.263). It was Mazdzer's third World Cup medal, and the fourth time in the last nine World Cup competitions that a U.S. men's slider reached the podium.
Before that run, the U.S. had gone nearly seven years without a World Cup men's medal.
Tucker West of Ridgefield, Connecticut, was seventh, one week after getting his first World Cup win at the Lake Placid, New York, stop last weekend. Aidan Kelly of West Islip, New York was 20th.
The race was shortened to one heat because of ice conditions.
