COURCHEVEL, France (AP) Austrian skier Eva-Maria Brem posted the fastest time in the first leg of a World Cup giant slalom race ahead of Swiss skier Lara Gut.

Brem is looking for her first win of the season after finishing second in GS in the Swedish resort of Are last weekend and in Aspen, Colorado last month.

She leads Gut by .09 seconds and is .18 clear of Frenchwoman Tessa Worley ahead of the afternoon's second run.

American Lindsey Vonn hoped to bounce back after skiing off course and failing to finish Saturday's downhill in Val d'Isere, which Gut won.

Although Vonn made a strong start in sunny and mild conditions, she lost speed down the Emile-Allais course and trails Brem by .89 in 10th.

Gut is only two points behind Vonn in the overall standings.
