Olympic hopeful Amber Neben of the United States cruised to victory in the women's time trial at the Pan American Road and Track Championships on Friday.

The former world time trial champion finished the out-and-back course in the coastal city of Mar del Plata in 26 minutes, 60.096 seconds, to take the gold medal ahead of Canada's Rhae Shaw, who finished in 27:47.068. Clemilda Silva of Brazil was third.

Neben won the event in 2006 and took bronze last year. She'll lead a U.S. squad that includes Coryn Rivera, Shelley Olds and Beth Newell in the road race Sunday to close out the competition.

Neben is vying for a spot on the U.S. team heading to the London Games.
