Kyle Busch leads final Sprint Cup practice at Sonoma Raceway

Kyle Busch needs a win to have any hope of making the 2015 Chase for the Sprint Cup.

While the weekend is far from over, Friday's final Sprint Cup Series practice at Sonoma Raceway was certainly promising for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

Busch, a former winner at the 10-turn Northern California road course, topped all other drivers with a fast lap of of 96.175 mph in his No. 18 Toyota.

JGR's Carl Edwards, Stewart-Haas Racing's Kurt Busch, Michael Waltrip Racing's Clint Bowyer and Furniture Row Racing's Martin Truex Jr. completed the top five.

Five-time Sonoma winner and Vallejo, California native Jeff Gordon, who is making his final start at his home track this weekend, finished sixth in the order.

The 85-minute session was halted briefly with seven minutes remaining when Michael Annett's car stopped on the track, the result of a broken transmission.

Bowyer led the day's earlier session, topping out at 95.547 mph over AJ Allmendinger and Sam Hornish Jr.

The second and final Sprint Cup practice of the weekend completes Friday's on-track activities.

Qualifying is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET Saturday (FOX Sports 1) when 44 drivers will compete for 43 positions on Sunday's grid.
