Kenseth, Kahne, Truex, Almirola, others swept up in Daytona melee
For the third time during Sunday night's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, a multi-car wreck brought out the caution flag on Lap 105.
The incident occurred when Matt Kenseth came down the track with Kasey Kahne below him on the bottom lane. As the two cars came together, Kenseth's No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was sent sliding down the banking and clogging up the track behind him.
As Kahne's No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet slowed for Kenseth's spinning car, Jamie McMurray got into the back of him, sending the car up the track and hard into the outside wall off Turn 4.
With the track closed up, defending race winner Aric Almirola, Pocono winner Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Larson, Sam Hornish Jr., David Ragan, Trevor Bayne and Brad Keselowski all incurred damage.
Almirola took his car directly to the garage, where his Richard Petty Motorsports crew members worked on fixing the damage in an effort to get back on track.
"I saw two cars spark on the inside. I heard them start to spin, and I thought if I stayed in the gas that I'd get clear of it," Almirola said. "At the last second I saw a car out of the corner of my eye shoot back up the racetrack and catch me in the left rear. Daytona is a game of inches. Another 24 inches and I would've been clear of that."
Truex was also left disappointed after having a well-handling car in the draft.
"It looked like the 5 (Kahne) and the 20 (Kenseth) got together somehow," said Truex. "Just another situation where we were kind of running outside there minding our own business and just like in practice just got caught up in somebody else's wreck. It's unfortunate, but that's the way this place is."
