Guy Martin, an 11-time winner of the Ulster GP - an annual motorcycle road race that takes place on the Dundrod circuit in Northern Ireland - survived a violent crash on Thursday after highsiding his Superbike during the Dundrod 150 race.

The Tyco BMW team, for which Martin was racing, issued a statement on Friday explaining that the 33-year-old Brit had suffered fractured vertebrae, broken ribs and a broken sternum. He underwent surgery on Friday.

Due to his injuries, Martin will be forced to miss Saturday’s Ulster GP.

Martin was leading at the time when the crash took place on Lap 6 - the final lap - of the Dundrod 150. The team explained that Martin was trying to get a good run out of the corner, aware that Bruce Anstey was not far behind. Once Martin crashed, the red flag was brought out and the race was not restarted, the win being handed to Anstey.
