Ken Roczen won $100,000 after a first, a fourth and a first at the Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Ryan Dungey took the second overall spot but, in reality, Roczen’s closest challenger could have been Jason Anderson, who took a sixth, a first and a third. Anderson would have taken the $100K with a top-2 finish in the first main, but forgot to take the joker lane and so was penalized five positions, dropping him from first to sixth.
However, Anderson did find consolation in the fact that he won the Toyota Tundra after taking all three holeshots.
Anderson later explained that when he saw the lapboard say “9” during the first 10-lap main, he thought it meant the start of the ninth lap, and not the end, and thus didn’t pit on the final lap, believing he still had an extra lap to run.
Trey Canard was leading early on in the first main when he went down, handing the lead over to Roczen. James Stewart - who was making his return following his suspension - went down behind Canard and was out for the rest of the night with a wrist injury.
Canard also had a scary moment in the third main after contact with Jason Anderson early on in the race.
Meanwhile, 14-year-old Lance Kobusch swept both the Super Mini motos, and 17-year-old Austin Forkner swept both the Amateur All Stars motos. Forkner has won all six Monster Energy Cup races he’s competed in.
