The stars of NHRA will be back in action this weekend at the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona, for the 32nd annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.
The Top Fuel, Pro Stock and Funny Car classes were on track just two weeks ago for the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, where Steve Torrence won in Top Fuel, Greg Anderson in Pro Stock and Ron Capps in Funny Car.
Subsequently, all three drivers hold the points leads in their respective classes, Torrence for the first time in his 10-year career.
“This is the most optimistic I’ve been going into any season," Torrence said. “To come out and qualify well and run well on race day, it’s huge for us. I’ve never been in this position and I kind of like it.”
In Funny Car, Capps was able to break a winless streak that dated back to 2014. “When you are given a great car like I have, you are the last piece of that puzzle,” Capps said. "So you had better not go out there and mess it up.”
In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson took the first win in a new era of the class following drastic changes to the cars over the offseason, including the switch to electronic fuel-injection, removal of the hood scoops, addition of a 10,500 RPM rev-limiter and a shortened wheelie bar. “I am honored to be the recipient of the first trophy of this new era,” Anderson said. “This was a fantastic team effort.”
FS1 and FOX Sports GO will broadcast qualifying from the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in a one-hour show beginning at 10 p.m. ET Saturday night. Three hours of finals coverage will follow at 5 p.m. ET Sunday.
