During the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis, James Hinchcliffe unexpectedly retired his car on course during the middle of the race. He had been hit by a piece of debris that had flown off of another car and suffered a concussion.
Hinchcliffe was evaluated Tuesday by the IndyCar medical team in conjunction with its neurosurgical consultant. IndyCar Medical Director Dr. Michael Olinger said that Hinchcliffe is progressing well and has been cleared to begin light training with his athletic trainer.
He has not, however, been cleared to resume driving duties. Hinchcliffe will be re-evaluated Thursday, May 15 in hopes of returning to the car for the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 25.
