Hamilton to start in back row at Chinese Grand Prix

SHANGHAI (AP) Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton will start at the back of the field at the Chinese Grand Prix after an engine problem with his car prevented him from setting a lap time in qualifying on Saturday.

Hamilton complained about a problem with his power unit early in the session and after pitting briefly so his team could try to fix it, he encountered the same problem when he returned to the circuit.

The last time Hamilton started this far back on the grid was at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2014 when he qualified last after his engine caught fire during qualifying.

Hamilton, the two-time defending champion in Shanghai, already faced a five-place grid penalty for an early gearbox change.
