Disturbing footage has emerged of Italian MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli being dropped by medical staff as he was carried from the track on a stretcher at the Malaysian MotoGP.

Simoncelli sustained fatal injuries when he crashed into fellow riders Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards on the second lap of Sunday's race at Sepang International Circuit.

The footage, which was uploaded to YouTube, shows medical staff rushing on to the track before clumsily placing him on a stretcher.

One of Simoncelli's legs is seen hanging off the side of the stretcher as trainers carry him towards an ambulance in the center of the circuit, picking up speed along the way.

The medical staff then stumble and drop the stretcher holding the 24-year-old before picking him up again and lifting him over a fence and into the waiting ambulance.

Simoncelli was pronounced dead soon after.

Simoncelli's father Paolo is quoted on the YouTube page as saying, "I was 10 meters [32 feet] away, but Marco was already dead, it changed nothing."

A funeral for Simoncelli is to be held Thursday in his home town of Coriano.
